Chess Coaching

On-line Lessons

Chess coaching pic 1 If there's one thing most of my students agree on that's the level of committment and hard work that I'm willing to put into my student´s learning process. This can only come from a genuine interest and enjoyment of the work that one does, and let me be honest, it's not so common...
When someone has formally made the decision to become my student, I try to gather as much information as I can , so that I can get a better picture of what his/her current level and goals are.
Chess coaching pic 2 The next step is working out a training plan. This plan will be “goal oriented”, in other words, together we'll review and outline some clear goals. My task will be to help you achieve those goals. During this stage we'll agree on the day and time for our lesson.
Soon after this, you will get a list with the first 4 topics that we'll be working on. If you choose the standard coaching plan, you get the option of choosing some of the topics that we’ll cover in those lessons.
Chess coaching pic 3 I'm currently offering 4 different coaching plans:

  • Sparring
  • No chosen topic, no pre-selected opening, you just get to play on-line against a strong International Master on the server of your choice, and you also get to pick the speed of the games. This is the most affordable option, but you get a couple of bonuses... (full details when you fill out the information request form, see below)
  • Training Games
  • Ideal for students who want to prepare specific topics such as an opening line, a particular type of endgame, positions with a particular feature and so on.
  • Standard training
  • live on-line lessons covering a large variety of topics on strategy, endgames, planning, tactics, etc. Full on-line support, free study files, tracking, etc. Best value.
  • New! Off-line Coaching
  • Some people have a pretty busy schedule or would rather work on their own at their own pace. The advantage of off-line coaching is that there’s no time pressure. You will get your assignments only once you’ve completed the one you ́re working on .Your progress will be monitored, and you get a few extras as well, including voice messages.

Lessons are normally done on the Internet Chess Club (ICC) Chess server or the playchess.com chess server.
For more information, please fill in our information request form, and we'll send you a .pdf file with all the details.

And here's a selection of 3 clasical games. Please use the arrows only if you want to see the following game:

  • Alartosev-Capablanca, Moscow 1935. A classic game where the Cuban GM seems to be doing very little. But small advantages tend to pile up and this game is no exception.
  • Capablanca-Levenfish, Moscow 1935. Meran variation. What makes this game a little special is the accuracy of white's attack: not even a modern computer could have handled it better!
  • Rubinstein-Hirschbein, Poland 1927. A wonderful attacking game by the "Uncrowned Champion", Akiba Rubinstein. Bb1, forcing the creation of a weakness on f6, followed by Ne4! are classy moves.
